Dublin Eclectic

011-ranelagh-residence-kingston-lafferty-design[1]

Can one successfully combine Industrial, Victorian, Baroque, and Modern styles, just to name a few? You be the judge. This extremely eclectic home designed by Kingston Lafferty Design in Dublin, Ireland does just that. Modern style rules in the dining and lounge areas while the living room, study, and bedrooms all give a nod to the past. The outdoor areas are just as intriguing as the interior with the mix of greens, blues, and varied furniture styles. I say the blend works. What’s your verdict?

house-3[1]

This trio of adorable fairy lit treehouses were built by architect and environmentalist Peter Bahouth to serve as a “fort for grown-ups”. The houses, linked by swinging bridges, are named “Mind”, “Body”, and “Spirit” and feature a living room and a bedroom with a bed that slides out to offer a better view of the surrounding forest. Where is this magical land you may ask? In the forested backyard of Bahouth’s Atlanta home. My only question is, no bathroom? For a more detailed article on the structures click here.

Hilla Shamia

07Aug14

shamia-1[1]

I am deeply in love with this exquisitely beautiful furniture by Hilla Shamia who pours melted aluminum onto naturally ragged wood pieces, a process she calls wood casting, resulting in these tables and benches. I am also quite happy to see a female furniture crafter which is urging me to learn how many more are out there. If you know of any, let me know. See more on Hilla’s website

Do you find yourself staring over and over at that big blank boring wall that you still don’t know what to with? Whether you rent or own there are many options to liven up those fearsome walls without breaking the bank. Below are some ideas that might work for you.

1.If you have a fear of being stuck with a whole room filled with wallpaper that is not easy to remove, maybe just do one feature wall to cut down cost, use wall decals, use repositionable wallpaper or use a large blown up photo instead.

2. Have an artistic friend? How about an art school nearby? Ask your friend or ask an art instructor about having students do a mural or repeat a design element already in your home for much less than hiring a professional.

3. Piece together reclaimed wood to create an organic and textural wall. All you need is a hand saw, hammer, and nails. Use the thinnest nails possible to make touch ups easier if you decide to take it down later.

4. Get that box of photos and create a memorable wall of all black and white or all color photos. Tools needed could be as simple as tape or thumbtacks.

5. One of the most economical ideas is to use current or vintage newspapers to create a typography filled wall.

6. If you travel collect maps to use in place of wallpaper. If you like a vintage look the maps can be tea stained for a minimal cost.

Here are some spaces that will hopefully inspire you to banish that boring wall in your home!

1116[1]This lovely eclectic apartment is an interesting blend of traditional, modern, vintage, and mid-century modern with vibrant pops of color and some interesting color combinations such as the regal fuchsia and grey bedroom. I especially love the wallpaper in the bathroom, the ornate chandeliers throughout and the pink light that glows in the shower. This light filled home showcases eclectic style at it’s best. pb

Cyril Roland

20Jul14

tumblr_n8u1uyjCux1qbe766o5_500 Cyril Roland (a.k.a. Aqua Sixio)began experimenting with digital drawing in 2003 even though he had never drawn before. He needed the creative outlet to offset his studies to be a clinical psychologist. He eventually graduated to Photoshop and Wacom tablet and “This allowed me to reproduce photos, all while experimenting with colors and tools. Studying psychology at the time, I needed an outlet, a way to express myself, to exist, to create something, to dream a little, to play with colors. For me creating was personal, I wasn’t studying art. I wanted to create my own universes and tell stories, like in video games or how Tim Burton does.” His patience has paid off, his works are universes we would all like to visit. pb

01-05[1]

I recently revisited some gorgeous lighting fixtures and furnishings by designer Marjorie Skouras and decided to delve deeper into her style. Boy, was I blown away. She obviously has no fear in her design choices and her own house is crazy good with color and whimsy. After passing through the damask door (love!!) you are greeted by a camel? deer? Who cares, it’s wearing a fez. Topiaries in the bedroom, naturally, apparently real sea creatures in the dining area, of course, would I love to visit her home? Absolutely.  So, cheers to her for not caring one iota about what others think, but, just for the record, I think her style is divine.  For shopping info click here and here .    pb
