Reading in the Round

28Apr12

I love to read. Books. Actual books. I love the feel of the bindings and the pages and I even love the smell of them, especially old books. But let’s move on. I have so many books I have run out of room and they set, forlorn I am sure, in the garage in boxes. Many people face the same problem of no room in their home for a library. So what’s the solution? Go up! That’s what the team at Travis Price Architects did. The owner, Wade Davis, had an extensive work related book collection, he is an anthropologist, ethnobotanist, author and photographer. So the architects adapted the unused space over his head by building the shelving units in a dome like space that can be accessed by ladder. They describe the space “as similar to the rotunda of the oracle’s temple at Delphi.”  Brilliant.   pb
