Design Master: Dorothy Draper (1889-1969)

Dorothy Draper was known for using striking colors in highly contrasting color schemes that were quite shocking at the time.  She also used dramatic touches such as black and white tiled floors, huge mirrors, strong stripes, lacquered doors and elaborate moldings. She hated “drab” rooms and considered all neutral palettes to be included in the “drab” category. She was the first widely famous female interior designer. She believed in living life to the fullest and urged everyone to fight the “will to be dreary” and of “being resigned to life” and not to be so terribly serious about it.  I love her quote “If something looks right, it is right”.  Enough said.   pb
