In Celebration of the Groove Guru
“If your heirs won’t fight over it, we won’t make it.” That is how committed Jonathan Adler is to creating a great product. In a fairly short amount of time Adler has grown a rather large empire after launching his first ceramic collection in 1994 at Barneys New York. He now has 20 stores worldwide, a thriving e-commerce site, and a wholesale business boasting over 1,000 locations globally. Not too shabby. In addition to being a potter he is also an interior designer, author, and “dedicated to bringing style, craft, and joy to your life”.
I think the most important thing Jonathan Adler has achieved is his ability to bring fun, color, and sass back into the world of design, interior and otherwise all with a strong sense of elegance. He has a no holds barred attitude toward designing your space with his “10 Commandments for a Happy Chic Home” in which he encourages all to ban minimalism and embrace maximalism, welcome color and fun, and indulge ourselves in hotel-like comfort. Adler lives by these commandments, especially the 9th, he and husband Simon Doonan, along with Norwich Terrier Liberace, have a ping-pong table in their living room. His style nods to the iconic fun-loving 1960′s and most all of his creations evoke those images but in an updated hip way.
I celebrate and thank him for such products as the huge canister labeled Viagra, the banana vase, a peacock that holds your lollipops, psychedelic coasters, and the ” I don’t get out of bed for less than $10K a day” pillow just to mention a few. Who else would fashion a sunburst out of Barbies for the “real” Mattel Malibu Barbie Dream House for Barbie’s 50th anniversary? No one else comes to mind. To learn and see much more visit his website. Far-out man. pb
